How to Tell When You Need New Tires
Check your tread depth
Tread depth affects how well your tires grip, especially on snow, slush and ice. New tires usually start at about 10/32″ to 12/32″ of tread. Here are two quick ways to check yours:
- The penny test: Put a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, you’re at 2/32″ or less, the legal minimum in most states, and it’s time to replace your tires.
- The quarter test: Do the same with a quarter. If you can see the top of Washington’s head, you have less than 4/32″. Tires with less than 4/32″ of tread lose much of their grip in snow, so Montana drivers should plan to replace them before winter.
- Tread-wear bars: Look for small raised bars across the bottom of the grooves. When the tread is level with those bars, your tires are worn out.
Know your tire’s age
Rubber breaks down over time, even if the tread looks good. Many tire makers recommend replacing tires around six years old, no matter how much tread is left. To find your tire’s age, look for the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits show the week and year it was made. For example, “2321” means the 23rd week of 2021.
Watch for warning signs
Bring your vehicle in for a tire check if you notice any of these:
- Cracks in the sidewall or tread
- Bulges or blisters on the sidewall
- Vibration or shaking at highway speeds
- Uneven wear, such as one edge wearing faster than the other (often a sign you need an alignment)
- A tire-pressure warning light that keeps coming back, which could mean a slow leak

All-Season, All-Terrain or Winter Tires: What’s Best in Montana
The right tire depends on what you drive, where you drive and how much winter driving you do. Here’s how the three most common types compare for Bozeman-area drivers.
All-Season Tires
All-season tires are a good fit for daily driving around town. They offer a quiet ride and long tread life, and they handle wet roads and light snow. As temperatures drop below about 45°F, though, their rubber stiffens and they lose grip on ice and packed snow. They work well for commuters in mild winters but are limited on icy mornings and mountain passes.
All-Terrain Tires
All-terrain tires are a popular choice on Silverados, Tahoes and Suburbans. Their aggressive tread handles gravel roads, mud and snow, and they still drive smoothly on pavement. For winter, look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It means the tire meets an industry standard for severe snow traction. All-terrain tires are a great year-round option for trucks and SUVs that see a mix of highway and backroad driving.
Winter/Snow Tires
Winter tires deliver the best grip on ice and packed snow. They’re made with softer rubber that stays flexible in freezing temperatures, plus deep treads and thousands of tiny slits (called sipes) that bite into slick surfaces. They’re the top choice if you regularly drive to Big Sky or Bridger Bowl or over Bozeman Pass. Most drivers swap them on in late fall and back off in spring to protect the tread.
Tires for Popular Chevy Models
Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban
Chevy’s trucks and full-size SUVs work hard in Montana, from hauling trailers to driving gravel roads and trailheads. All-terrain tires are a popular choice, giving you traction off-road while still riding comfortably on the highway. If you tow often or drive a heavy-duty Silverado, LT (light truck) tires have stronger sidewalls and higher load ratings to handle the extra weight. For winter, look for all-terrain tires with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol.
Equinox, Traverse and Blazer
These SUVs are built for everyday driving, commutes, school runs and weekend trips. All-season tires offer a quiet ride and long tread life for most of the year. If you drive to Big Sky, Bridger Bowl or over Bozeman Pass in winter, a set of dedicated winter tires will give you much better grip on ice and packed snow.
Trax and Trailblazer
Compact and efficient, the Trax and Trailblazer are great for getting around town. Affordable all-season tires keep commuting costs low while delivering a smooth, quiet ride. For icy winter mornings, winter tires are a smart upgrade that makes these small SUVs much more capable in the snow.

Tire Care Tips to Make your New Tires Last
Check your tire pressure monthly
- Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature, so cold Montana mornings can leave your tires underinflated.
- Check the pressure before driving, while the tires are cold.
- Use the recommended pressure on the sticker inside your driver’s door jamb, not the maximum number on the tire’s sidewall.
Rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles
- Front and rear tires wear at different rates.
- Regular rotations even out the wear so all four tires last longer.
- An easy rule: rotate your tires at every oil change.
Get an alignment after hitting potholes
- Potholes, curbs and gravel roads can knock your wheels out of alignment.
- Watch for pulling to one side, an off-center steering wheel or uneven tire wear.
- A quick alignment check keeps your new tires from wearing out early.

About tires
- How do I know when I need new tires?
Try the penny test: put a penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is 2/32″ or less and it’s time to replace them. For winter driving in Montana, replace tires before the tread drops below 4/32″. Also watch for cracks, bulges or vibration. - How long do tires last?
Most tires last about 40,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on the tire type, your driving habits and road conditions. Many tire makers recommend replacing tires around six years old, even if the tread looks good, because rubber breaks down over time. Check the DOT code on the sidewall to see your tire’s age. - Do I need winter tires in Bozeman?
Winter tires aren’t required, but they’re strongly recommended if you drive to Big Sky or Bridger Bowl, over Bozeman Pass, or on icy roads often. Their softer rubber and deep treads give much better grip on ice and packed snow than all-season tires. All-terrain tires with the snowflake symbol are another good option for trucks and SUVs. - What’s the difference between all-season, all-terrain and winter tires?
All-season tires are quiet and long-lasting but have limited grip on ice. All-terrain tires handle gravel, mud and snow, which makes them popular on trucks and SUVs. Winter tires use soft rubber and deep treads for the best grip on ice and snow, and they’re usually swapped off in spring. - What does the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol mean?
The three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on a tire’s sidewall means the tire passed an industry test for traction in severe snow. You’ll find it on all winter tires and some all-terrain and all-weather tires. For Montana winters, it’s one of the best signs that a tire can handle snowy roads. - How often should I rotate my tires?
Rotate your tires about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Front and rear tires wear at different rates, and regular rotations even out that wear so all four tires last longer. An easy way to remember is to rotate them at every oil change. - Should I get an alignment with new tires?
Yes, an alignment is a smart add-on when you buy new tires. If your wheels are out of alignment, your new tires can wear unevenly and need replacing sooner. Potholes, curbs and gravel roads are common causes of misalignment, so we recommend having it checked when your tires are installed. - Why does my tire pressure light come on when it gets cold?
Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature, so a cold Montana morning can push your tires below the recommended level and trigger the warning light. Fill them to the pressure listed on your driver’s door jamb sticker. If the light keeps coming back, you may have a slow leak.
