What Is Section 179?

So, what is Section 179? It’s a part of the federal tax code that lets a business deduct the purchase price of qualifying equipment, including vehicles, in the year it’s placed in service. Without it, you’d typically spread that write-off across several years of depreciation. For the 2026 tax year, the IRS caps the total deduction at $2,560,000. It begins to phase out once a business places more than $4,090,000 of qualifying property in service.

Most small businesses never come close to those limits, so the rules for each vehicle matter more. On top of that, 100 percent bonus depreciation is now permanent for qualifying property acquired after January 19, 2025. Why do so many business owners use it? Deducting a vehicle up front lowers your taxable income this year, freeing up cash for the rest of your operation.

Which Chevrolet Vehicles May Qualify for Section 179?

Limits to Section 179 start with weight. Trucks and SUVs with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 6,000 lbs and up to 14,000 lbs get much more generous treatment than lighter passenger cars. For heavy SUVs, the deduction is capped at $32,000 for 2026. Pickups with a cargo bed at least six feet long, cargo vans with no seating behind the driver, and vehicles that seat more than nine people behind the driver aren’t subject to that SUV cap. At Ressler Chevrolet, we’d start with the full-size Chevy Silverado pickups, Tahoe, and Suburban, since full-size trucks and SUVs often carry a GVWR above 6,000 lbs. The exact rating is printed on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb, so check it before you buy. Our team can confirm the GVWR for any truck or SUV on our lot. Here’s a list of Chevy models that qualify:

  • Chevy Silverado 1500
  • Chevy Silverado HD 2500/3500
  • Chevy Colorado
  • Chevy Express Vans
  • Chevy Tahoe
  • Chevy Suburban
  • Chevy Equinox EV

Making the December 31 Deadline

To count toward this year’s taxes, you must purchase or finance the vehicle and place it in service by December 31. You’ll also need to use it for business more than 50 percent of the time, so keep a mileage log from day one. Used vehicles qualify as long as they’re new to your business, so our used inventory is worth a look if you’d like to stretch your budget. When it’s time to file, your tax preparer claims the deduction on IRS Form 4562. We’re a Chevy dealership, not a tax firm, so talk to your tax professional about how the deduction applies to your business.
